THE mortality rate among the fully vaccinated population was only at 0.009 %, Khairy Jamaluddin said, while reiterating that vaccines save lives.
“Vaccines work. Vaccines save lives and, regardless of the type, vaccines will give us protection. But there are still a small number of breakthrough deaths,” the Health Minister said in his weekly press conference today.
“The breakthrough rate of deaths for those who were vaccinated is 90 persons per similarly vaccinated population of 1 million. The message is, of course, there will be breakthrough deaths and this happens all over the world, but you are better off with a vaccine than without a vaccine,” he added.
He said 81% of the fully inoculated who succumbed to Covid-19 had comorbidities while 80% were over the age of 60.
“That also contributed to the outcome of mortality in those cases,” he added.
A breakthrough infection refers to a person contracting a disease after being inoculated with a vaccine that is meant to prevent that very illness.
Therefore, Khairy urged the public to sign up for vaccination and stop doubting the protection it can offer against the virus.
As of yesterday, about 16.49 million people or 70.5% of the adult population in Malaysia have been fully vaccinated with the Covid-19 vaccine.
This equates to 50.5% of the nation’s population. – September 9, 2021.
