A TOTAL of 4,604 of the Covid-19 cases today were breakthrough infections among the fully vaccinated with 36 in the severe category, Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.
Out of the 36 patients who are currently being treated at intensive care units (ICU), 12 are critically ill (Category 5) and require ventilator support.
The remaining 24 are down with pneumonia and given oxygen support. They are classified as Category 4 infections.
Forty-five are in Category 3 after contracting pneumonia and are under hospital care.
The bulk of the breakthrough infection cases today are in Category 2 or mildly symptomatic and Category 1 or asymptomatic.
There are 2,263 cases in Category 2 and 2,260 in Category 1.
A breakthrough infection refers to a person contracting a disease after being inoculated with a vaccine that is meant to prevent that very illness.
Meanwhile, the infection among the unvaccinated or partially vaccinated dominated the daily tally at 14,664 cases (76.1%)
The majority of these cases are in Category 2 (7,452), followed by Category 1 (6,894), Category 3 (164), Category 5 (83) and Category 4 (71).
In total, there are 19,268 new Covid-19 cases recorded in the past 24 hours.
More than 14.6 million or 62.6% of the adult population in Malaysia have been inoculated with a Covid-19 vaccine after 302,804 shots were dispensed yesterday.
Malaysia has administered over 34 million jabs since February. Of the total, 19.3 million or 82.8% were first doses. – August 30, 2021.
