Sarawak daily case toll continues to top 1,000

Sarawak logs 1,667 new Covid-19 cases today, with the majority of infections from the Kuching district. Five deaths have also been reported, which includes a 99-year-old victim. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, August 25, 2021.

SARAWAK reported 1,667 new infections today, with the bulk of the cases from the Kuching district.

Kuching reported 620 new cases, while the rest were Samarahan (151), Bau (139), Sibu (125) and Lundu (118).

The state disaster committee said 99.88% of the cases are category one (no symptoms) and two (mild symptoms) patients.

There was one category four (lung infection requiring oxygen) case and one category five (lung infection requiring ventilator) case today, raising the number of cases in the state’s intensive care unit wards to 53, of which 14 require intubation.

Sarawak also recorded five deaths, including a 44-year-old victim from Kuching who was announced dead on arrival at the Sarawak General Hospital, a 58-year-old man from Serian, a 63-year-old man from Samarahan, and the oldest victim, who is a 99-year-old woman from Kuching.

All had comorbidities, the disaster committee said.

The state also reported another new cluster today, increasing the number of active clusters in the state to 119.

According to the disaster committee, the new cluster is a community cluster in the Kg Opar, Bau, which concerns 66 infected villagers from the Bidayuh settlement.

Bau is a former gold mining town some 25km from Kuching. – August 25, 2021.
