Covid-19 cases surge back above 20,000

MALAYSIA is back reporting cases in the 20,000-range as the nation logged 20,837 cases as of noon today, said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
 
The director-general of health said the fresh infections today took the nation’s caseload to 1,593,602. 
 
Yesterday, cases in the country dropped to its lowest in the past 13 days when 17,672 cases were reported. 
 
As for the breakdown of cases by state, Selangor once again topped the daily chart with 4,645 cases. 
 
Overall, the Klang Valley, including Putrajaya, reported 5,965 cases or 29% of the total cases in the country, with Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya having 1,284 and 27 cases respectively. 
 
Coming behind Selangor was Sabah, which saw a big jump in cases as it reported 3,376 cases, a record figure for the state. Sabah’s previous high was 2,738 cases.
 
Penang was the state with the third highest daily cases with 2,054 cases, also a new high for the state. Its previous record was 1,523 cases on August 20.
 
Meanwhile, Johor and Kelantan also saw a surge in new cases with record daily high cases for the states at 1,743 and 1,422 infections respectively.

Johor’s previous high was 1,706 cases logged on August 12, while Kelantan’s highest was 1,370, reported on August 14.
 
Perlis, which is under phase three of the National Recovery Plan, also reported its highest cases to date with 74 infections.
 
Other states and territories reporting new cases are (in descending order) are Kedah (1,772), Sarawak (1,543), Perak (1,242), Pahang (521), Malacca (396), Negri Sembilan (351), Terengganu (383), and Labuan (four).
 
Meanwhile, the Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply said 396,578 doses were administered on August 23, of which 246,109 were second doses while 150,469 were first jabs.

About 13.31 million people, or 56.9% of the adult population in Malaysia, are now fully vaccinated after receiving two doses of the vaccine, while 18.47 million, or 78.9%, have received one shot. – August 24, 2021.
