A MAJORITY of new Covid-19 cases in the first two weeks of this month were people who have received one vaccine shot or not at all, data from the Health Ministry shows.
This group dominated category five cases (a critical state requiring respiratory assistance) every day in August thus far.
More than 90% of category five patients in this two-week period were not immunised.
There have been 2,344 category five cases since August 1, with the highest number of new patients on August 7, at 448.
Saturday saw a spike to 388 cases from 271 the day before, which became the second highest count this month.
The bulk of category one (no symptoms) cases also involved those who had only taken the first dose of vaccine or had not had a single jab.
This group made up more than 80% of asymptomatic patients throughout the two weeks.
Category one patients have accounted for 133,969 of Covid-19 cases since August 1.
A large portion of the country’s daily infections are in categories one and two (mild symptoms), each in the range of 8,000-11,000 cases per day.
Daily Covid-19 cases have remained in the range of 15,000-22,000 this month.
Most of the cases admitted to hospital involve those in categories three to five while categories one and two cases undergo self-quarantine at home.
Overall, more than half of the Covid-19 patients are unvaccinated.
So far, this month, 271,081 Covid-19 cases have been reported.
Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has been highlighting these figures daily in his tweets since August 11.
He has also stressed repeatedly for people to get the vaccine shots for protection against the coronavirus.
On Saturday, he said the Covid-19 vaccines used in Malaysia were proved effective against the Delta variant.
To date, health authorities have administered 27,293,915 million vaccine doses since February 24.
