PRIME Minister Muhyiddin Yassin must resign immediately after openly admitting he has lost the majority support in the Dewan Rakyat, said the Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR).

The group said Muhyiddin should not be concerned with which party has the majority now, and claimed he is violating the constitution by staying in power.

“It is now clear that he no longer has the majority and it is a constitutional responsibility for him to resign as the prime minister.

“It is not even his job to decide which party has the majority. Return this matter according to the spirit of democracy and the constitution,” the group said in a statement today.

Muhyiddin in a live telecast this evening appealed for bipartisan support when he faces a confidence vote in Parliament next month.

Muhyiddin said the reason why he has not resigned despite losing majority support, claiming that until now, there is no other MP who commands majority support to enable the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to appoint a new prime minister.

SSR said that it will take to the streets once again if Muhyiddin fails to step down.

“With Muhyiddin’s speech just now, people will be more confident that he no longer has the credibility to hold the reins of the country’s leadership.

“We will take to the streets on August 21, if Muhyiddin does not resign and does not respect the spirit of the constitution,” SSR added.

Muhyiddin also promised several reforms if he survives a confidence vote in Parliament next month.

These include equal funding for all MPs for constituency needs, a limit to the prime minister’s term, implementation of Undi18, and greater checks and balances in parliamentary committees.

SSR said it considered Muhyiddin’s announcement as “rubbish” and dishonest.

“If the statement was made six months ago, then we can still assume that it was a good intention to involve all parties in the fight against Covid-19,” the group said.

SSR called people to join them on August 21 and take to the streets, saying people are continuing to struggle under Muhyiddin’s leadership. – August 13, 2021.
