Record high of 360 Covid-19 deaths

Malaysia logs a record high 360 Covid deaths today, raising the toll of fatalities to 10,749. – The Malaysian Insight pic by Nazir Sufari, August 8, 2021.

MALAYSIA today reported a record breaking 360 Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours. 

This brings the overall death toll to 10,749. 

The numbers today come just as the government eased more restrictions for people who have completed their two doses of vaccination in states that are in phase two and above in the national recovery plan.

Admissions in the intensive care unit also remained high with 1,095 patients, of whom 571 are on respiratory support.

Malaysia reported 18,688 new Covid-19 cases today. 

Of this figure, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 401 patients or 2.1% were those in categories 3, 4 and 5 while 18,287 or 97.9% were in category 1. 

Category 1 patients are asymptomatic while category 2 patients show mild symptoms. Category 3 patients have pneumonia, category 4 patients are on oxygen while category 5 patients are those on ventilators. 

Noor Hisham said 4,460 of the Covid-19 patients today have been vaccinated. 

Selangor contributed to the bulk of the deaths today, reporting 221 deaths out of 360. 

Double-digit deaths were reported in Kuala Lumpur (41), Malacca (20), Perak (17), Penang (15) and Johor (14). 

There were seven deaths in Kedah, six each in Negri Sembilan and Pahang, five each in Sabah and Terengganu, and two each in Putrajaya and Kelantan. 

Of the deaths today, 85 were classified as dead on arrival.

The infectivity rate currently stands at 1.08. The state with the highest infectivity rate is Perlis at 1.47, followed by Kelantan (1.25) as well as Sabah and Penang (1.18).   

Despite the high infectivity rate, Kelantan, Sabah and Penang have transitioned to phase two of the national recovery plan while Perlis is in phase three. – August 8, 2021.
