18,688 new Covid-19 cases, with more than 8,000 from Klang Valley

Selangor and Kuala Lumpur contributed 8,448 fresh Covid-19 infections to the total of 18,688 new cases logged nationwide over the past 24 hours. – The Malaysian Insight pic by Irwan Majid, August 8, 2021.

MALAYSIA reported 18,688 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, a slight dip from yesterday, Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today.

Yesterday 19,257 cases were reported, while the highest infection in a single day was reported on Friday, when the country logged 20,889 cases.

Malaysia’s cumulative Covid-19 infections now stand at 1,262,540.

The Klang Valley accounted for the bulk of the new cases with 8,448 infections.

Selangor logged 6,565, followed by Kuala Lumpur (1,883) and Kedah (1,610).

Meanwhile, Sabah reported 1,379 cases, Johor (1,308), Penang (694), Kelantan (870), Negri Sembilan (1,140), Perak (861), Pahang (602), Sarawak (581), Terengganu reported (598), Melaka reported (526), Putrajaya (63), Perlis (6), and Labuan (2).

To date, 8.2 million or 25.3% of the population have been vaccinated, while 15.3 million or 47% have received their first doses.

Meanwhile, 65.6% of the adult population has received one dose, and 35.3% of adults received two doses.

Noor Hisham said that the country may observe a downward trend in cases by the end of this month, once the country has fully vaccinated 40% of its population.

Putrajaya aims to fully vaccinate the entire adult population by October. – August 8, 2021.
