MALAYSIA logged 20,596 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest daily infections since the start of the pandemic, Health Director-General Dr Nooor Hisham Abdullah said.
Selangor and Kuala Lumpur made up more than half the number with 8,549 and 2,163 cases respectively.
This is the first time the daily number of infections have passed the 20,000 threshold.
Noor Hisham said with the number of new infections in the past 24 hours, the cumulative total of cases now stands at 1,203,706.
High numbers of fresh cases were also reported in Kedah (1,446), Johor (1,300), Sabah (1,062) and Penang (1,022).
Perak (916), Malacca (622), Pahang (426) and Terengganu (511).
Putrajaya and Labuan reported cases in the double digits, with 50 and 15 cases respectively, while only four cases were detected in Perlis.
The number of Covid-19 vaccines administered yesterday fell below the 500,000 target, with only 494,214 shots dispensed.
Of yesterday’s figure, 230,053 were first doses, while 264,161 individuals received their second dose.
This raised the total number of people who have been vaccinated to 22.64 million.
And of this total, 14.9 million or 45.8% of the population have received one dose, and 7.7 million or 23.6% of the population has received their second dose. – August 5, 2021.
