Is it now wrong for a non-Muslim to talk about faith, asks Guan Eng

DAP will defend its assemblyman in Selangor, Hannah Yeoh, who is under attack for “talking about her faith”, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said.

He asked why Yeoh, who is the Selangor legislative assembly speaker, is being persecuted for talking about her Christian religion.

“Is it wrong for a person, a non-Muslim, to talk about his or her faith? She is not preaching to Muslims. She is merely talking about her religion,” he said today.

Universiti Utara Malaysia lecturer Dr Kamarul Yusoff today lodged a police report against Yeoh in Kedah, asking police to investigate whether the politician was proselytising to Muslims through her book.

Kamarul had used Yeoh’s Christianity to allegedly demonstrate how DAP only wished for separation of state and religion when the religion was Islam.

Yeoh’s autobiography, Becoming Hannah, is an account of her journey as wife, mother and politician. A lawyer by training, Yeoh joined politics in 2008 and was elected as Subang Jaya assemblyman the same year.

The book saw a soft launch in 2014 before its official launch a year later.

Lim said the DAP administration in Penang had also been accused of trying to Christianise the state by its former ally PAS.

He said PAS should had turned its guns instead on MCA, whose state chairman Tan Teik Cheng had recently slammed the Pakatan Harapan administration for being anti-Chinese because it had increased Islamic development funds by 100% since taking over the state.

“Why didn’t PAS defend us against MCA if it is a party that defends Islam?” said the Penang chief minister.

He said PAS was also racist and chauvinistic by asking for a constitutional amendment to ensure only a Muslim Malay could become prime minister, when everyone has already accepted that to be a fact.

He said there was never doubt that only a Malay could be the prime minister as the majority race in Malaysia was Malay.

“Everyone knows the next PM and those who come after will be Malays.

“But by asking for this amendment, PAS is reducing other races to second or third class citizens. Even Umno has never suggested this,” he said. – May 17, 2017.

  • Reject UMNO, Reject PAS. This is the only option sane Malaysians have now. These two parties are absolute abominations and should never be allowed to chart the path and future of Malaysia anymore!
