PUTRAJAYA is aiming to inoculate 6.1 million people in the Klang Valley with at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine by August 1, Khairy Jamaluddin said today.

Khairy, who is also the minister of science, technology and innovation, said as of July 15, 3.5 million people in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor have already received their first dose and the remaining 2.6 million will get their first shot by August 1.

The coordinating minister for the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme said to achieve the target, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor will have to administer 272,000 doses daily during the period of July 26 to August 1. These include 181,000 for the first dose and 91,000 for the second dose.

“We have just announced ‘Operation Surge Capacity’ for KL and Selangor. All adult residents in KL and Selangor will receive their first dose by 1st August.

“This will be done with increased supplies and capacity. Between July 26 and August 1, KL and Selangor will need to do 272,000 a day,” he said in a joint online press conference with Health Minister Dr Adham Baba in Putrajaya today.

“I have discussed with the Selangor menteri besar and to ensure that this programme is successful, there needs to be a close working relationship between the state and federal government.

“To that end, we have agreed to elect Bangi lawmaker Ong Kian Ming to be the coordinator of this programme in Selangor,” he said.

Khairy also urged all individuals above the age of 18 years old to register for vaccination to ensure that the programme is successful.

“11% of those above the age of 18 in the Klang Valley have not yet registered to be vaccinated,” he added.

He also announced that Malaysia will be receiving 1,742,130 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine next week, while another 2,420,730 doses will be sent at the end of the month.

More than 45 million doses of the US-made Pfizer vaccine have been purchased for the immunisation programme.

With the latest delivery and the one million doses donated by the United States government, Malaysia has received a total of 7,145,190 doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

Malaysia has also received 11,140,480 out of 12 million doses of the China-made Sinovac vaccine on July 15. Sinovac is expected to complete its delivery by this month.

Yesterday, Khairy said Malaysia would stop administering the Sinovac vaccine once the supply ends.
