‘Darkest day’ as Health Ministry records 126 Covid-19 deaths

MALAYSIA saw its most tragic day on record today, after 126 people succumbed to Covid-19.

The new fatalities raised the death toll to 2,993.

The previous high was 98 deaths, which was recorded on May 29. Today’s toll makes it the first time the daily figure crossed the 100 mark.

The Ministry of Health described today as the “darkest day” since the onset of the pandemic with the high number of deaths, active cases and patients in need of critical care.

The number of patients in intensive care units was at an all-time high with 878 cases, of whom 441 were on respiratory support.

The number of active cases also increased to 82,274 as 7,703 new cases were reported against 5,777 recoveries in the past 24 hours.

With this, the number of recoveries now stood at 501,898. 

There were 10 dead-on-arrival cases today.

The oldest of the deceased was a 98-year-old woman who died at the Raja Permaisuri Bainon Hospital in Ipoh, Perak. She suffered from a stroke.

There were two deaths in the youngest category – both were 27 years old.

One of them was a man who had a history of obesity and asthma. He died at the Labuan Hospital.

The other was a woman who died at the Machang Hospital.

Selangor saw the highest number of deaths, at 29, followed by Kuala Lumpur (18).

Other states that recorded deaths today are Negri Sembilan (14), Kelantan (12), Kedah (10), Johor (11), Sarawak (four), Labuan (eight) and Pahang (three).

Malacca and Terengganu recorded five deaths each while Sabah, Perak and Putrajaya reported two each.

Penang reported one death. – June 2, 2021.
