No UK-Indian hybrid variant Covid-19 cases in Malaysia

Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah says there has been no cases of Covid-19 with the UK-Indian hybrid variant detected in the country as yet. MALAYSIA has yet to detect any Covid-19 cases with the UK-Indian hybrid variant, said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The health director-general said the variant had only been detected in Vietnam so far.

“We have tightened border control and we are conducting screenings. Currently, those entering from countries with variant of concerns are required to undergo quarantine for 14 days,” he said.

He added that those arriving from high-risk countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan are required to undergo quarantine for 21 days.

Noor Hisham said the 21-day quarantine requirement was made based on risk assessment.

Vietnamese authorities said on May 30 that the UK-Indian variant can be airborne.

The country’s Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long described the new variant as a hybrid of the two known variants. – May 30, 2021.
