ICU Covid-19 patient numbers remain at record breaking levels

MALAYSIA has had record breaking numbers of Covid-19 patients under critical care at intensive care units (ICU) for over a week now.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah today said that there were 481 confirmed Covid-19 cases warded at ICU as of 12noon today.

Among them, 247 required respiratory support.

This means that the country has been smashing its own records on Covid-19 cases in ICU for eight consecutive days.

There were 354 patients under critical care on May 6, which was an all-time high at that point, since the onset of the pandemic last year.

The number increased to 372 on May 7, 393 (May 8), 416 (May 9), 434 (May 10), 453 (May 11) and 469 yesterday, before today’s record was set.

As for fatalities, the country also reported 27 deaths today, the second highest to date.

Yesterday’s 39 deaths from Covid-19 was the highest daily toll so far.

The new fatalities today raise the death toll to 1,788.

The oldest among the deceased was an 83-year-old man in Kepala Batas, Penang , who also suffered from high blood pressure and heart disease.

The youngest fatality today was a 40-year-old man in Raub, Pahang. The deceased had diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. – May 13, 2021.
