SARAWAK today announced a record seven new Covid-19 clusters, with six of them located in the populous Kuching district.

The odd cluster is in the Sri Aman district, the state disaster management committee said in its daily Covid-19 report.

The clusters in Kuching are at the Stapok resettlement scheme, the Asia Villa residential area, Jalan Rubber, Jalan Tun Jugah, a Kemas kindergarten at Jalan Puncak Borneo and a budget lodging house in the city.

The committee said the cluster in the resettlement area is a community cluster where to date, 26 people, including the index case, are positive for the Covid-19 infection.

They were among 117 people living in the resettlement and the index case’s close friends and family members who were ordered to be screened.

All the 26 people have been either warded into the Sarawak general hospital or the low-risk Covid-19 treatment and quarantine centre for treatment and isolation.

Asia Villa is also a community cluster, which affected three generations of one family.

So far, 15 people out of 83 that were screened, have tested positive for the infection while 69 have yet to get the result of their test.

The committee also said one death has been reported from this cluster.

Jalan Rubber is also a family and workplace cluster with 12 people, out of 155 that were tested, positive for the infection.

Another workplace cluster is Konsortium Bumi at Jalan Tun Jugah, which has to date have eight employees, including the index case, with the infection.

A teacher at the government-run Kemas kindergarten in Jalan Puncak Borneo, 18km from the city, has been identified as source of infection that had affected 10 members of her family and work colleagues.

The committee said 27 people have tested positive in the Nanga Skrang longhouse in Sri Aman.

There were 405 new cases reported in Sarawak today with 289 of the cases or 71% detected in Kapit, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri and Kuching districts.

There was also one death reported today – a 43 year-old Beluru man who died in the Miri hospital.

He was referred to the Miri hospital after complaining of breathing difficulties.

He also had fever and was coughing for three days before he sought treatment.

A test on May 3 showed he was positive for Covid-19.

He is the 212th person to die from the infection in the state. – May 12, 2021.
