SARAWAK Pakatan Harapan (PH) has called for power to be decentralised and returned to the individual states.
Its chief Chong Chieng Jen said the returning of power to the states was a form of revolution and reformation.
“This is not specifically for Sabah and Sarawak only. If it works, it can be applied to other states on the peninsula,” he said at the PH convention at Ideal Convention Centre in Shah Alam, today.
He said there is a problem when too much of power is in the hands of the federal government.
“Therefore we are telling the people of Sarawak that this is a new concept, new hope where the state government is given a bigger power and responsibility,” he said, adding that a bigger budget was needed for its implementation.
He said PH had also promised the people of Sarawak oil and gas royalties of 20% instead of the current 5%.
“50% of the taxes collected in Sarawak will be returned to the state,” he added.
In September, PH had presented a “new deal” for Sabah and Sarawak which it argued was better than the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
PH said its six-point offer to Sabah and Sarawak was definitely better than the provisions enshrined in the Federal Constitution. January 7, 2018.
