LIMIT corporate contributions to political parties to RM200,000 a year and make it mandatory to report contributions of more than RM10,000, said PKR’s Sim Tze Tzin.

The Bayan Baru MP said such reforms would help Malaysia curb corruption, which had become endemic.

Sim said that Malaysia should emulate Germany and Japan where political parties received parliamentary allocations and all expenses were audited and reported to parliament.

“Party’s assets should also be audited by the auditor-general and made public,” said Sim during a policy debate at the Pakatan Harapan convention in Shah Alam today.

The Malaysian Insight reported yesterday that a recent Universiti Malaya survey showed that voters want their elected representatives to have integrity and be non-corrupt.

Sim said reforms were also needed for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to be free to do its work.

“We propose that the commission members have security of tenure so that they can work without fear.”

Bersatu strategy director Dr Rais Husin said a PH government would ensure that MACC commissioners were vetted and appointed by a parliamentary select committee so that they are not subservient to the government.

Sim also suggested that elected representatives, government officers (above Grade C) and GLC top officials be required to declare their assets.

PH is expected to announce its prime minister candidate and the seat allocations to PKR, Amanah, DAP and Bersatu ahead of the 14th general election today. – January 7, 2018.
