5 of 15 new Covid-19 clusters linked to educational institutes

COVID-19 clusters linked to educational institutions have dominated the list today, accounting for a third of the 15 clusters reported.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said six of the 15 clusters reported today were classified as community transmission while the remaining nine were related to workplaces.

Of this, five of the workplace clusters were linked to educational facilities.

Kelantan contributed to four clusters linked to educational facilities.

These were Kampung Bunut Sarang Burung (50 cases), Kampung Domis (40), Kampung Labuk (nine) and Kampung Kok Lanas (31).

The fifth educational institution cluster, known as Jalan Labuk Tiga, was detected in Sandakan and Lahad Datu in Sabah. The cluster reported 15 positive cases.

Sabah also reported one other workplace cluster while Selangor reported two workplace clusters.

Kuala Lumpur saw one workplace cluster.

The clusters were detected at a service centre, factories and restaurants.

The Taman Rakyat cluster in Dungun, Terengganu, reported 25 cases. The cluster was one of the three clusters linked to social gatherings reported today.

The other two clusters were Biah Skim in Keningau and Melangkap Tomis in Kota Belud and Tuaran. Both Sabah-based clusters reported 10 cases each.

Meanwhile, the Bechah Semak cluster in Pasir Mas and Tanah Merah, Kelantan (36 cases) and Jalan Cempaka Putih in Kulai and Kota Tinggi (nine cases) were traced to symptomatic index cases.

Completing the list of community clusters was Kampung Pokok Machang, which reported 14 cases.

The cluster linked to a severe acute respiratory illness patient saw cases spread across districts in Baling, Kuala Muda and Kulim, Kedah.

Noor Hisham also declared that 10 clusters were now inactive.

With this, the number of active clusters in the country stands at 346. – April 15, 2021.
