UMNO has the full backing of its delegates to cut off ties with Perikatan Nasional (PN) as soon as the emergency comes to an end, said Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Earlier during his closing speech, Zahid said Umno delegates had given the mandate to the Supreme Council to withdraw Umno’s support from the PN government.
The Emergency Order, which began on January 11, is scheduled to end on August 1 subject to a monthly review by a special committee that was set up to advise the king.
Zahid also said delegates had accepted and endorsed his policy speech unanimously.
“The first motion decided that Umno will not be with Bersatu or PN in the 15th general election.
“The second motion is that the 42 BN MPs will not be with the PN government when Parliament is dissolved,” he said.
He added that most of the delegates also supported the call for all ministers and members with any government posts to quit if the general election is not called soon.
He said further details will be discussed when the Supreme Council meets.
Earlier, Zahid said in his closing speech that Umno can withdraw its support from the PN federal government at any time if there are no indications of fresh elections soon.
“Earlier, I said that there is a possibility that they will delay elections or change the date.
“But if this is what they will do, I trust this mandate will cause all 100% of our ministers, deputy ministers and GLC chairmen and MPs to withdraw from PN,” said the 68-year-old.
Zahid also told reporters that the party will look into actions that can be taken against “backstabbers”, referring to party leaders who had criticised him for wanting to break off ties with Bersatu and PN.
“Since the Umno General Assembly is the highest body, then Umno members and the leadership must abide by the party’s decision.
“There should be no allegations out there that Umno is being manipulated,” Zahid said. – March 28, 2021.
