DAY workers have been blamed for a coronavirus outbreak on an oil platform in the Baram delta, off Miri, Sarawak

Sarawak disaster management committee chairman Douglas Uggah said 49 workers on the rig were infected because some of the day workers, who are “from high-risk areas”, did not obey the SOPs.

The infections were discovered during the weekly mandatory screening for offshore oil and gas workers.

Uggah said all the exposed workers on the platform have been quarantined and the facility sanitised.

He said outbreak was fortunately under control due to the isolation and limited mobility of the workers.

The 49 infected workers formed formed the bulk of the 89 new virus cases recorded in the Miri district in the last 24 hours.

Sarawak reported 361 new cases today, Sibu accounting for 73 of them, Bintulu (71), Betong (60), Kuching (22), Subis (11), Sarikei (9), Mukah (8), Kapit (6), Selangau (4), Serian (4), Meradong (3) and Julau (1)

Meanwhile, an enhanced movement control order has been issue for two buildings where the rooms are rented out in Bintulu.

Uggah said Rumah Sewa Anong at Mile 5 of the Bintulu-Miri Road and Rumah Sewa Beverly Hills in Taman Beverly Hills are locked down for two weeks starting noon tomorrow. – March 4, 2021.
