Record high of 24 Covid-19 deaths, 3,100 new cases

MALAYSIA once again broke a grim record after reporting 24 Covid-19 deaths today.

This comes merely six days after the country reported the previous high of 21 fatalities.

The latest number of deaths brings the national death toll to 896.

Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said only three of the victims who succumbed to the coronavirus were foreigners while the remaining 21 were citizens. 

Meanwhile, the country reported 3,100 new cases today.

The fresh cases bring the overall caseload to 245,552 while active cases stand at 51,977. 

Selangor topped the tally with 1,196 cases followed by Johor and Kuala Lumpur with 490 and 295 cases respectively. 

Only one of today’s cases was imported. 

On recoveries, Noor Hisham said 2,340 people were discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours. 

With this, the total number of recoveries from the coronavirus now stands at 192,679. 

Meanwhile, 282 patients are currently warded in intensive care, with 134 requiring respiratory support.

Prison and construction site clusters, on the other hand, reported 29 cases.

The oldest person to succumb to the coronavirus was a 98-year-old man who suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, while the youngest was a 44-year-old woman who had a history of high blood pressure and anaemia.

Selangor saw the highest number of deaths at seven. – February 8, 2021.
