Unity first, PM candidate later, opposition told

THE opposition must first be united to have a shot at taking Putrajaya, instead of talking about who will be the next prime minister candidate, said a Pejuang leader.

Information chief Ulya Husmuddin slammed DAP’s Ng Suee Lim for provoking the question who would be prime minister instead of trying to unite Pakatan Harapan with opposition parties like Pejuang to win the 15th general election.

“If you keep on provoking, causing disunity and anger among the opposition, do not ever dream to be in the government again.

“We cannot win this without a united opposition. We have the weakest government and an equally fractured opposition,” Ulya told The Malaysian Insight.

Ng, who is Selangor DAP vice-chairman, said Pejuang head Dr Mahathir Mohamad should stop “dreaming” about becoming prime minister for a third time and just leave opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim alone.

The Sekinchan rep blamed Dr Mahathir’s personal feud with Anwar as the reason PH was split in the first place.

Ulya, however, slammed Ng for deviating from the initial plan, which is to bring down the Perikatan Nasional government, and not throw stones at each other.

“It is not about Dr Mahathir or Anwar. It is us Malaysians uniting against an evil regime that cares about their own pockets instead of the people during a health crisis.

“This fight is beyond personalities. We are in politics for the people. Our main efforts should be keeping a cool head, uniting our fronts and trying to find the middle ground,” he said.

He also said if Ng wants to air PH’s dirty laundry publicly, potential voters would be driven away and would not support the opposition as well.

“In these troubled times, let us focus on the issues of the people. Talking about politics in public only makes people sick of politicians.

“We need to solve our problems internally. Let us not make this hard for everyone,” said Ulya.

Dr Mahathir now heads Pejuang after being ejected from Bersatu by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Pejuang is not part of PH but counts itself among opposition ranks.

Pejuang’s current official status is in question, as the Registrar of Societies has rejected its application.

Ng spoke to The Malaysian Insight recently on his views about possible cooperation between DAP and Umno to oust the PN government led by Muhyiddin, who betrayed Dr Mahathir and PH by leading Bersatu out of the coalition to form a new government in late February last year.

Now out of power, Dr Mahathir had said he never thought Anwar would have made a good prime minister, that he could never get along with his former protege, and that he never believed Anwar’s assertions he had the numbers to change the government. – January 27, 2021.
