WITH no cases of local transmissions reported in the last 14 days, Sarawak’s most populous district, Kuching, has been declared a Covid-19 “green zone”.

In the Health Ministry’s four-colour coded designation, a district is given the yellow status if there are between one and 20 cases of local transmissions reported in a two-week period, orange (21 to 40) and red (more than 41).

With the change of status, Serian district – about 65km from Kuching – is the only area in the state still in the yellow zone.

There are none in the orange or red zone.

The pandemic in the state continues to look positive as there are no new cases reported today and the state disaster management committee reported a 97.21% recovery rate of people infected with the virus.

Nineteen people, out of 1,075, had died from the infection.

The disaster committee stated only 11 people – nine in the Sarawak general hospital (SGH) in Kuching, one each at the Bintulu and Miri hospitals – are still being treated for the infection.

Most of them were classified as “imported cases”, meaning they were infected overseas and detected on return to the state.

To date, only Kluster Besi, a cluster that broke out among workers of an iron fabrication factory and their families on the outskirt of Kuching city, remained active and is being monitored by the authorities. – December 15, 2020.
