One-third of 1,600 new virus cases from Seremban prison cluster

NEGRI Sembilan accounted for about one-third of 1,600 new Covid-19 infections reported in the last 24 hours, the result of a spike in infections in the Bakti prison cluster.

Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 500 out of 541 cases in the state are from this cluster.

The two other states that saw the most number of cases are Selangor and Sabah, at 426 and 248, respectively.

Collectively, prison and detention clusters were responsible for 548 cases out of today’s total new infections.

Today’s fresh cases raise the national caseload to 74,294, while active cases are at 11,604.

Only three of today’s cases were imported.

Two deaths were reported in Sabah, raising the death toll to 384. They are of a 76-year-old woman and 59-year old man, both of whom had underlying health issues such as hypertension.

On recoveries, Noor Hisham said 1,033 people were discharged from hospital in the last 24 hours after recovering from the coronavirus.

With this, the total number of recoveries now stands at 62,306 cases.

Health authorities also discovered two new clusters of infection.

Meanwhile, 129 patients are currently treated in intensive care, of whom 57 require respiratory support. – December 7, 2020.
