ALLEGATIONS that Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) is split between supporting PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad are not true, said Amanah MP Khalid Samad.

The Amanah communications director said that all Amanah MPs were in support of Anwar as prime minister, and have signed statutory declarations to that effect.

“All Amanah MPs have signed the SD to support Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister. Reports from the media saying Amanah is divided between supporting Anwar and Mahathir are not true and should be corrected.

“We just disagree in attacking or criticising Dr Mahathir as we are all in the opposition in one group.

“We need to unite to defeat Perikatan Nasional,” said Khalid in a press conference in Parliament.

He was responding to reports that Amanah was divided, with several senior party leaders wanting to support Dr Mahathir as the prime minister.

The chatter became louder when Amanah’s Meru state rep Mohd Fakhrulrazi Mohd Mokhtar quit the party yesterday to join PKR.

Khalid said that Amanah was in the midst of getting Dr Mahathir and Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) president Mohd Shafie Apdal to join them in rejecting Budget 2021.

“We are trying to get their support so that we are united in rejecting the budget on November 26.

“Certain parties from outside Amanah are trying to cause friction in the party with the intention to cause divisions in the opposition ranks,” he said.

A rejection of the budget at the voting stage next week would also mean a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s ultra slim majority government.

Earlier today Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also ramped up the pressure on Muhyiddin by urging the Perikatan Nasional government not to delay any vote of confidence on the prime minister. – November 19, 2020.
