SARAWAK’S state budget has allocated RM48 million for its newly introduced rental assistance scheme to alleviate problems faced by the urban poor and migrant workers.

The scheme, to be introduced next year, would benefit about 20,000 eligible households, Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg said.

He said the scheme is to assist the low-income group in reducing cost of living and mitigate urban poverty.

Under this scheme, eligible applicants from the low-income group will receive a rental assistance of RM200 per month for up to a maximum period of three years.

The state’s 2021 budget also allocated RM390 million for urban renewal projects under the urban renewal programme to address related issues and overcome overcrowded settlements. – November 9, 2020.
