SARAWAK’S much-talked about autonomous rapid transit (ART) system will take off next year.
Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg, when tabling the state budget today, said RM384 million will be allocated next year for its implementation.
The ART system, possibly utilising Chinese technology and Chinese-made equipment and vehicles, is to address traffic congestion in the Kuching–Samarahan areas.
Abang Johari told the state assembly that the ART system was one of the major initiatives in the development of the Kuching Urban Transport System.
“It is also to promote an efficient and sustainable transport system at the same time,” he said.
“Transport infrastructure acts as a key enabler to ensure seamless mobility and connectivity to all growth areas in the state.
“Hence, the State Integrated Transportation Master Plan up to 2050 will be formulated to chart the policy directions, plan, strategies and initiatives for the sector.
The whole cost of the ART system is estimated to be around RM5 billion – far cheaper than the RM10 billion light rail transit that was originally proposed.
The system reportedly will utilise “smart” or “intelligent” technologies, like autogate and cashless payments, where passengers can use digital wallets like Sarawak Pay or other similar applications to pay for their fares.
The vehicles, which will run on dedicated lanes, will also be green vehicles. – November 9, 2020.
