PAS said it will wait and see how Umno’s threat to withdraw support for the Perikatan Nasional government play out.
The Islamist party’s information chief, Kamruzaman Mohamad, said PAS is still backing Perikatan Nasional and Muhyiddin Yassin’s leadership but discussions on the matter will be done in the near future.
“We have only discussed in Muafakat Nasional, hopefully this matter can be discussed soon, this week.
“At the moment we are still supporting PN and Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister and are working to strengthen MN,” he told The Malaysian Insight.
Pengkalan Chepa MP, Ahmad Marzuk Shaari said, he does not have any information about Umno’s demand about formalising MN but sees it as a positive attempt to stabilise PN.
“For me, what is proposed by Umno is to strengthen the unity between PN and other component members. For me that is Umno’s intention, not to bring down the existing government.”
Umno on Tuesday night announced it was considering withdrawing from supporting PN.
Secretary general Ahmad Maslan announced that the party is demanding new conditions in a written agreement before it can continue cooperating with PN.
The announcement was made following an Umno political bureau meeting after the party’s advisory chairman, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah was granted an audience by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Tuesday afternoon.
Tengku Razaleigh met the king after Anwar Ibrahim had a 25 minute meeting with the Agong to present evidence of support from MPs to back him as PM.
Several other party leaders including DAP and Amanah were scheduled to meet the King but that had been postponed due to the conditional movement control order (CMCO).
PAS Deputy Youth Chief Ahmad Fadli Shaari said the Islamist party could not make a decision without knowing the details of Umno’s demands.
“If we do not know what Umno wants, we cannot express a stand.”
“We will wait and see what the conditions are,” said Ahmad, who states that PAS will continue to support PN and strengthen MN.
“We are not very surprised, but it was unexpected. We did not expect to reach this stage.
“But that is the right of Umno because it still has many MPs, so we will see how.” – October 15, 2020.
