THE Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has been instructed to review the renaming of Jalan Raja Laut 1 to Jalan Palestin, said Annuar Musa today.

The federal territories minister said he does not encourage the renaming of roads around the city centre that has historical and cultural significance.

“The proposal to change the road name was done by the former federal territories minister (Khalid Samad) in 2019.

“Jalan Raja Laut is not affected, its Jalan Raja Laut 1, which is a slip-road. So, I have asked DBKL to look into this,” he said at the Federal Territories Ministry in Putrajaya today.

On Sunday, former Kuala Lumpur Mayor Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said that Jalan Raja Laut 1 will now be known as Jalan Palestin.

He said the idea to change the name was mooted at the World Quds Day peaceful assembly held at DBKL on May 26 to 31, last year.

“In general, I do not encourage roads that have historical names to be tampered with.

“There are many roads that are no longer relevant that do not reflect the identity of the nation or the English name,” said Annuar today.

Nor Hisham had said the renaming to Jalan Palestin symbolised Malaysia’s support for the Palestinian people’s struggle against oppression and, ultimately, to form a Palestinian state. – October 1, 2020.
