3 new virus clusters in Sabah, KL

THE fallout from the Covid-19 outbreak in Sabah continues in the peninsula as a new cluster has been identified in Kuala Lumpur.

In a statement, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the three clusters are Setapak (KL), as well as Buang Sayang and Kg Sakong (Sabah).

Noor Hisham said the index case for the Setapak cluster had travelled to Tawau and Semporna from September 17 to 20.

He said the individual experienced symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, muscle pain and diarrhoea since September 21. 

The individual was admitted to a medical centre on September 25, where Covid-19 test results came back positive. 

The patient was then shifted to the Sg Buloh Hospital in Selangor.

He said the Buang Sayang cluster, which has infected four people so far, was discovered in Sipitang, Sabah. 

He said the index case had travelled to Sipitang from September 7 to 20, and started experiencing symptoms such as fever, cold and sore throat on September 19. 

The individual was confirmed positive for Covid-19 on September 20 and was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Sabah. 

As of noon today, 10 people have been screened and six are still awaiting their test results.

He said nine cases were detected in the Kg Sakong cluster in Semporna, Sabah.

Noor Hisham said the index patient was asymptomatic and tested positive on September 18, through a community screening. 

“The asymptomatic case is currently warded at the Tawau Hospital,” he said.

Health authorities have screened 66 individuals as of 12pm today and 57 are still waiting for their results.

The housemate and a friend of the index patient also tested positive and are being treated at the same hospital. 

The ministry has screened 27 individuals as of noon today, and 16 tested negative for Covid-19. One person is still waiting for the test results. 

Noor Hisham said all locations linked to the three clusters have been disinfected and sanitised. 

The national death toll from Covid-19 rose to 134 today with one new death reported in Sabah.

A total of 150 new infections were also reported in the past 24 hours, of which 146 were locally transmitted while four were imported, he added. 

Noor Hisham said Sabah accounted for the bulk of cases at 124. 

The new daily cases bring the national caseload to 10,919. – September 27, 2020.
