FORMER deputy director at Sabah Water Department, Teo Chee Kong, who was arrested today in a corruption investigation over which he was detained last year, is expected to be charged in court tomorrow.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy commissioner Azam Baki confirmed this following Teo’s arrest in Kota Kinabalu around noon today.

Teo, along with the another former director at the Sabah Water Department, Ag Tahir Ag Alip, were investigated for alleged abuse of power and money laundering linked to contracts for RM3.3 billion worth of federal-funded projects awarded to the department since 2010.

Both men were detained on October 4 last year in what appeared to be MACC’s biggest cash seizure yet,  involving RM114 million worth of assets, including RM53.7 million cash stashed in their homes.

Teo had in his possession 127 land titles and about RM29 million in overseas accounts.

MACC seized nine vehicles worth RM2.7 million, jewellery worth RM3.64 million, and designer handbags worth RM500,000.

Three Sabah Water Department employees also voluntarily surrendered about RM1 million allegedly accepted in the process of approving water projects.

Locals have dubbed the case the “Sabah Watergate”. – December 12, 2017.
