PAKATAN Harapan is not above playing to the gallery though it accuses Barisan Nasional of doing so.
Penang Barisan Nasional chairman Teng Chang Yeow said the opposition had been doing the same thing for years.
“PH uses different narratives on different communities as well. They used that in the last two general elections,” Teng Chang Yeow said.
“We are just using the same (approach),” the state Gerakan chairman told a press conference in Penang today.
He said what politicians told their audiences in different communities varied according to perception, and the different groups’ needs and demands.
“Take DAP for instance. Will they tell the Chinese at temple dinners how much allocation the Penang government sets aside for Islamic affairs development?
“Will they go and tell the Muslim community how much the state spends on non-Muslim affairs development?”
Teng was referring to the PH Penang government increasing its allocation for Islamic affairs development.
The state government, led by DAP, has been talking up its efforts to develop Islam and the interests of Muslims in the state.
PH chief secretary Saifuddin Abdullah said yesterday that Umno and BN had always used “fear-mongering tactics” to attract voters after an aide of the prime minister, Isham Jalil, said the Chinese were being taken for granted by PH.
Saifuddin said BN had been telling the Malays not to trust PH because it was controlled by DAP, while the Chinese were being told PH had forgotten them.
In a recent closed-door session at the Selangor Gerakan headquarters, Isham told Bukit Lanjan polling district leaders that PH was taking Chinese voters for granted by proposing Dr Mahathir Mohamad of Bersatu and Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail of PKR as interim prime minister and deputy prime minister should the opposition form the government after the next general election. – December 11, 2017.
