MOHAMED Azmin Ali is trying to mislead lawmakers by making inaccurate statements on the ratification of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), said Lim Guan Eng today.

The DAP secretary-general, addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, said the international trade and industry minister told the Dewan Rakyat that the pact was ratified by the Pakatan Harapan administration on September 5, 2018, but omitted the fact that the decision was reversed at a cabinet meeting later that year.

For this reason, Azmin should be referred to the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee, he said.

“When he told the House that the PH cabinet agreed to ratify CPTPP on September 5, he did not state that we then decided against it on November 29.”

The former finance minister said he referred the Gombak MP to the parliamentary committee on August 13.

“However, Azmin instructed his ministry’s secretary-general, Lokman Hakim Ali, to write to Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun to explain the issue.

“The speaker then crossed out his motion to refer Azmin to the committee.

“Azmin should have been the one giving the reply, not the secretary-general. This is an insult to the speaker.”

Lim said he is willing to withdraw his referral to the panel if Azmin apologises to the Dewan Rakyat and clarifies the facts surrounding CPTPP.

On August 4, Azmin said PH never decided to reject the pact, and blamed Lim for politicising the matter. – August 28, 2020.
