9 local transmissions among 11 new Covid-19 cases

MALAYSIA recorded 11 new Covid-19 infections in the past 24 hours, of which nine were locally transmitted, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today.

All nine locally transmitted cases involved Malaysians. The fresh cases bring the national toll of infections to 9,285.

Noor Hisham said seven of the nine locally transmitted cases were detected in Kedah and of this five were linked to the Tawar cluster.

All five cases were primary school pupils who were close contacts of another pre-school pupil reported to have contracted the infection on August 16.

The other two locally transmitted cases in the state were detected during a pre-surgery screening while the other was an asymptomatic patient.

One case was detected in Selangor during the screening of a target group while another was discovered in Perlis where the patient had severe acute respiratory infection.

Meanwhile, the remaining two of the 11 cases reported as of noon today, were imported.

Six patients were discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours, bringing the total recoveries from the coronavirus to 8,971.

Active cases, on the other hand, stood at 189.

No fatalities were reported, keeping the death toll at 125.

Meanwhile, eight patients are currently warded in the intensive care unit, with six requiring respiratory support. – August 25, 2020.
