BANGLADESHI Md Rayhan Kabir, who appears in an Al Jazeera documentary on the plight of illegal immigrants in Malaysia during the movement-control order, will be deported “as soon as his Covid-19 test is done” and flight ticket, ready.
His lawyers today said Malaysian authorities have decided not to file charges against their client, who is under remand until today.
“The Immigration Department has decided to deport Rayhan. There are no charges filed against him,” said counsel Sumitha Shaanthinni Kishna.
“He will be deported as soon as his Covid-19 test is done and his flight ticket is ready.”
Rayhan is also represented by lawyer C. Selvaraja.
The 27-year-old was arrested on July 24 following the release of the documentary, in which he alleges the mistreatment of migrant workers at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.
After being held for the maximum 14 days, he was remanded for 13 days to facilitate investigations into claims he overstayed in the country.
Director-General of Immigration Khairul Dzaimee Daud had said Rayhan would be sent back to Bangladesh once the probe wrapped up, suggesting this could be as early as August 31. – August 19, 2020.
