THE Perikatan Nasional government is working to boost Bumiputeras’ socioeconomic status without hampering other races’ opportunities and rights, Muhyiddin Yassin told the Dewan Rakyat this morning.

Although there have been successful efforts to enhance the community’s standard of living, said the prime minister, their socioeconomic standing needs to be improved.
He said the incidence of poverty among Bumiputeras last year stood at 7.2% compared to 1.4% among the Chinese and Indians (4.8%).
Bumiputera equity holdings in the corporate sector in 2015 were at 16.2% compared to the 30.7% held by non-Bumiputeras and foreigners (45.3%).
“The unemployment rate among Bumiputeras was 3.7% in 2019 compared to the national average of 3.3%,” said Muhyiddin.
He said the PN government is committed to steering the Bumiputera agenda as a national one.
Putrajaya has set up the Bumiputera Prosperity Council, chaired by Muhyiddin, to guide the said agenda and expedite initiatives to improve the community’s socioeconomic status.
The Bumiputera agenda will be driven through the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 and 12th Malaysia Plan, which will be tabled next year.
Muhyiddin was replying to Mujahid Yusof Rawa (Parit Buntar-PH), who asked about the measures taken to bolster the Bumiputera economy.
The prime minister said the spirit of entrepreneurship will be instilled in the community via joint efforts between agencies such as Perbananan Usahawan Nasional Bhd, Majlis Amanah Rakyat and Bumiputera Agenda Steering Unit (Teraju).
Teraju has been made the coordinating agency for these initiatives, and is the sole coordinator of the Bumiputera database across ministries, government departments and government-linked companies.
In addition, said Muhyiddin, efforts will be channelled towards education and human capital development for B40 and M40 households, with scholarship programmes to be offered, among others.
“Other initiatives include the Carve Out & Compete policy, and key performance indicators for Bumiputera achievement in ministries, departments, agencies and GLCs. Bumiputera holdings in equity and strategic assets will be improved, too.”
Hasan Arifin (Rompin-BN) asked whether the government will promote “genuine” joint ventures between Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera businesses, to which Muhyiddin said the government will consider the suggestion.
Mujahid, in a supplementary question, asked about the government’s stance on the Buy Muslim First campaign that was pushed by Umno and PAS during the previous Pakatan Harapan administration.
The prime minister pointed to the recent launch of the Buy Malaysian First campaign, which is aimed at promoting local products, including those certified halal, to spur an economy hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. – August 13, 2020.
