EMPLOYERS should educate their migrant workers on hygienic and preventive measures against Covid-19 to prevent its spread, said director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
Noor Hisham said migrant workers are vulnerable due to their cramped and confined living spaces as well as poor personal and environmental hygiene, which allow the disease the spread easily.
“Employers should be responsible in educating their workers on hygiene and preventive measures,” he told the daily press briefing on Covid-19.
“Employers will also have to ensure that such measures are practised at their workplace and lodging.”
To date, three clusters of infection with a total of 88 positive cases have been detected at construction sites.
As of today, 27,833 construction workers have been screened for Covid-19 by their respective employers, Noor Hisham said.
The cases were detected following the screening of construction workers in red zones in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, as required by the National Security Council.
The three clusters are Kuala Lumpur construction site cluster, the Setia Alam construction site and the Kuala Lumpur construction cluster 2.
Of the 88 positive cases, 77 were Bangladeshis, 11 Indonesians and one Malaysian.
The Kuala Lumpur Health Department has ordered the closure of the site of the latest construction cluster and the shared accommodation of the workers.
The Construction Industry Development Board has also carried out disinfection and sanitation work at construction sites and is also ensuring that standard operating procedures (SOP) are adhered to. – May 26, 2020.
