KEDAH could see a new menteri besar sworn in this weekend following the loss of majority support in the state assembly for incumbent Mukhriz Mahathir, said sources.
They said Perikatan Nasional (PN) had shown proof to the Kedah sultan that it has the necessary support to take over the state government.
“Pakatan Harapan is no longer in power in Kedah. The swearing-in ceremony for the new menteri besar will be held either tomorrow or on Sunday.
“The ceremony can be held on a small scale,” a source, who is a PN state rep, told The Malaysian Insight.
Another PN assemblyman meanwhile said all 36 state reps met individually with Sultan Sallehuddin Badlishah today.
“His Majesty asked us if it is true that we have lost confidence in the menteri besar.
“Based on the outcome of this meeting and the statutory declarations we have in hand, we are confident of forming the next state government.
“Of course the decision is for the sultan to make but we are positive that we can form the new government,” he added.
He said it was also up to the sultan to decree when the new menteri besar would be sworn in.
The sultan met with the assemblymen today at Wisma Darul Aman in Alor Star.
He interviewed the 23 PN elected reps, including two who recently defected from PKR, in morning and the Pakatan Harapan (PH) reps at 3pm.
Embattled menteri besar Mukhriz was the last to meet the sultan at 4.30pm.
Mukhriz’s position is under threat besar following the defection of PKR assemblymen Azman Nasrudding (Lunas) and Robert Ling (Sidam) to PN.
Four Bersatu assemblymen who had earlier backed Mukhriz have also switched sides.
With the six defections, Mukhriz no longer has majority support in the state assembly.
Although Bersatu left PH in February, leading to the fall of the federal PH government, Mukhriz remained the menteri besar by working with PH in the state.
Mukhriz currently has the vote of 13 reps – five from PKR, four Amanah and two each from Bersatu and DAP. – May 15, 2020.
