THE Federal Territories Ministry will allocate RM1 million to help the homeless in the city get back on their feet after the movement control order (MCO) ends.

Its minister, Annuar Musa, said that it was looking at long-terms plans for the homeless.

“Some have drug problems. There are also those who could have mental illnesses.

“So, we will set aside RM1 million to help the homeless,” he told the ministry’s daily press conference today.

There are about 800 homeless people currently being housed in Kuala Lumpur City Hall shelters in the city for the duration of the MCO.

Annuar said the funds will also be channelled to civil society groups that can assist the ministry.

“We need people to help in terms of counselling, health check-ups, treatment and advice on health issues.

“They will be included in the task force to assist the homeless.”

He added those who are healthy and able to work will be given jobs.

Annuar also urged the private sector to collaborate with the ministry, whether though funding, aid or services.

Last week, Annuar said several companies had agreed to provide up to 700 jobs for the homeless.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall is also looking at providing a hostel for the homeless who secure jobs.

If there is no further extension to the MCO, which ends on April 28, Annuar said those in shelters could begin their new jobs as early as May 1.

The MCO was enforced on March 18 to break the chain of Covid-19 infections, which recorded 4,817 cases as of yesterday, with 77 deaths. – April 14, 2020.
