THERE are no restrictions to freedom of speech or holding demonstrations as long as police are given five days’ notice of the event, said Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador.

He, however, said the protesters must abide by the Peaceful Assembly Act that has been amended to make it easier for the people to be heard.

“I have not stopped anyone to gather or to voice their opinions, but they should give notify the police.”

He added that the notice must be given five days before an event.

“The notice is for us to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety or the general public and those taking part in the demonstrations,” he told reporters at marine police base in Klang today.

He also expressed his disappointment with lawyers who have hurled criticism against police action over public gatherings held without adequate notice.

“They are lawyers. I urge them to be more understanding.

“They should not accuse of police of trying to curb the freedom of the people.”

Police have so far recorded statements from 15 activists who have held demonstrations over the weekend to protest the appointment of Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.

The activists, however, said peaceful street protests are enshrined in the federal constitution, adding that the police should assist the protesters and not to clamp them down. – March 5, 2020.
