THE late Karpal Singh will be remembered as one of the greatest chairman DAP has ever had, said deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo.
Gobind, who is Karpal’s son, was commenting on the fact that the former chairman still managed to get 43 votes despite his death from a car accident in 2014.
“Well, to me we had no choice but to abide by the rules that were put in place by RoS (Registrar of Societies) which means since he was nominated as the candidate and his name remained in the ballot paper, you still see him getting votes despite the fact he is no longer with us.
Karpal died in an accident on the North-South Expressway near Gua Tempurung in Perak while travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Penang on April 17, 2014.
Gobind, who received 1,198 votes during the party’s central election committee (CEC) re-election today, was elected as the party’s deputy chairman.
The Puchong MP came in second after DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang, who polled 1,199, with only one vote short.
“I am honoured by the trust given to me by the delegates, and everyone saw the numbers today, and I was elected as DAP deputy chairman.
“I am very happy and I hope I will be able to contribute and take this party to greater heights.
“This is the kind of team we need in order to face off Barisan Nasional (BN) in the next election,” said Gobind.
During the party’s CEC re-election today, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who received 1,180 votes and party supremo Lim Kit Siang retained their positions as DAP’s secretary-general and parliamentary leader, respectively.
Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai retained the post of DAP chairman. – November 12, 2017.
