LEADERS aligned to Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin have arrived at Istana Negara to state their support for him as prime minister to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
A convoy of vehicles arrived just before 10am, in it Muhyiddin, Mohamed Azmin Ali, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa.
The same leaders were seen leaving the palace at 10.40am.
Also seen among them was Gabungan Parti Sarawak parliament whip Fadillah Yusof, and PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.
Takiyuddin, on his way out, told reporters: “We will return tomorrow.”
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has summoned party leaders to state their prime minister candidates, after his personal interviews with MPs did not yield any candidate with a definitive majority.
In the last 24 hours, alliances have shifted, first from a Muhyiddin versus Anwar Ibrahim race, to a Muhyiddin versus Dr Mahathir Mohamad race as of this morning.
As of yesterday, Muhyiddin was confident of the support of 97 MPs.
This comprised 36 from Bersatu, and includes former PKR MPs in Mohamed Azmin Ali’s team, 39 from Umno, 18 from PAS, two from MCA, one each from MIC and PBRS.
PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, meanwhile, has 93 MPs, all of whom are from PH.
But Dr Mahathir issue a shock announcement this morning, saying he once again had the numbers to be prime minister after a meeting with Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders who have now thrown their support behind him.
Dr Mahathir said he never signed any statutory declaration that supported Muhyiddin for prime minister and had conveyed this to Bersatu MPs.
Simultaneously, PH also issued a statement this morning that it was backing Dr Mahathir again.
Gabungan Parti Sarawak, which has 18 MPs, is to announce its stand today, while Parti Warisan Sabah’s nine MPs and Upko’s one have previously aligned with the old PH government but yet to make clear on the new developments. – February 29, 2020.
