THE rights of Sarawak will not be sacrificed in any decision Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) makes during the current impasse in forming a national government, said Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg.

In a statement, the GPS chairman said the opposition coalition supported interim Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to continue as the prime minister, as it wanted political stability in order for the nation to move forward, words he reiterated at a press conference in Miri earlier today.

“He was appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.”

When asked why not support PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Abang Johari said Dr Mahathir is already in place.

“He is there and the Agong appointed him as the interim prime minister.

“You must not create chaos in the country. It is stability which is important and the rakyat must come first so that the country is stable.”

The chief minister said he hoped the impasse will settle soon and a government put in place because the country is faced with mounting economic problems arising from the political uncertainties and the Covid-19 outbreak.

“The GPS government will abide by any decision taken by the king to solve the impasse based on Article 40 (2) (a) and (b), Article 43 (2) (a) and Article 55 (2) to be read together as enshrined in the federal constitution.” – February 26, 2020
