RED SHIRTS leader Jamal Yunos will sue Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin for saying he apologised in court for blaming one of her supporters for giving him a bloody nose during a police clash last November.
Just two days after retracting his allegations after Zuraida threatened to file a defamation suit, the Sungai Besar Umno chief will file a defamation suit of his own for comments she made during a press conference yesterday.
“I have directed my lawyers to sue her,” Jamal told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur High Court today.
Present were his lawyers V Mugunthan and Mohd Naseer Yusof.
“She said she succeeded in menjinakkan (taming) me. Someone who is buas (wild). This is insulting.
“I’m not worried if there are 10 lawsuits against me. But the decision has already been reached in court (to withdraw his comment and Zuraida’s suit).”
Jamal read out a statement of regret at the Kuala Lumpur High Court before judge S. Nantha Balan, who ordered the Sungai Besar Umno chief to pay an undisclosed amount to Zuraida.
The clash between the Red Shirts and police occurred at Ampang Point Mall on November 13 after Jamal led his supporters to follow Zuraida and other volunteers who were handing out Bersih 5 leaflets.
Yesterday, Zuraida held a press conference, saying she hoped Jamal would not repeat the allegations.
Mugunthan said the statement by Zuraida that Jamal had apologised in open court is “entirely untrue.”
“I advised and admonished Jamal in court not to behave recklessly and speak nonsense. I want this to be a lesson to him not to throw his weight around,” Zuraida was quoted as saying.
Mugunthan said: “During mediation before Natha Balan, the solicitors and counsel for (Jamal) unequivocally told the court Jamal would not apologise to Zuraida.
“Subsequently, a mutually agreed statement was drafted by both parties’ solicitors. This statement was read out by (Jamal) in open court as part of the settlement. This statement does not include the phrase ‘meminta’ or ‘memohon maaf’.
“Costs were only paid, but the moment she stepped out of the court, Zuraida said Jamal telah memohon maaf (apologise), which is not true.
Jamal’s statement of regret read: “I uttered those words against the plaintiff in anger, therefore, I regret what I said.
“I hereby withdraw my comments I had said during a tense situation at Ampang Point Mall against Zuraida Kamaruddin.
“In addition, I also promise not to repeat any further comment in relation to the incident on November 13, 2016, against the plaintiff.”
Jamal said he was “disappointed” by Zuraida’s actions.
“Zuraida had voluntarily withdrawn her suit against me and I have also withdrawn my words and she agreed (to accept it).
“However, after the decision was made in court, she said all sorts of things, tidak siuman (mentally unwell), gila (crazy) and said I memohon maaf (asked to be forgiven) in front of the court.
“I’m convinced her character has changed. She appeared to be warak (pious). After she took on Tun Mahathir as her boss, cakap dah tak serupa bikin (says one thing, does another).” – November 9, 2017.
