THE PAS Dewan Ulama wing has accepted a motion demanding that the Islamist party severs ties with ally PKR.
The motion, however, states that the final decision to cut relations with PKR should be validated by the party’s Syura Council, the body of PAS’ most senior clerics which guides the party according to Islamic principles.
This is because the Syura Council is the final arbiter on issues related to PAS’ ties with other political parties, said Dewan Ulama information chief Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali.
The motion, which was tabled by Negri Sembilan PAS delegate Mohd Husainy Hussain, was unanimously accepted by the Dewan Ulama.
“There is no need to study whether or not we should sever ties. I know the decision has to be confirmed by the Syura Council but I want to divorce,” said Husainy while tabling the motion.
Husain tabled the motion also on behalf of the Ulama wings of Johor and Perak.
PAS and PKR’s ties have been strained since 2015, after a particularly fractious party poll which saw an exodus of party leaders and the demise of the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
The Islamist party is also uneasy with PKR’s alliance with DAP and its splinter party, Amanah, both of which it has repeatedly said it will not work with.
PAS has accused PKR leaders of insulting the party but the two parties are still working together in the government in Selangor.
While tabling his motion today, Husaini rattled off points to justify a PAS-PKR divorce.
Among them were that PKR and DAP had delayed PAS’ private member’s bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, and that PKR was still working with the DAP and Amanah.
“In 2015, they also took one of our parliamentarians. PAS has been patient for two years and I think it’s time to say enough is enough.” – April 27, 2017.
