THE Sarawak chief minister has dismissed speculations that the state ruling coalition, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has taken sides in the realignment of political powers allegedly taking place on the peninsula.

Abang Johari Openg denied claims that 16 GPS MPs were backing Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in a reportedly new coalition called Pakatan Nasional while two others were behind PKR president Anwar Ibrahim in what was left of Pakatan Harapan.

“We (GPS) are an independent pact. Whatever problems facing that side (on the peninsula) is their problem, not a Sarawak problem,” he told reporters after chairing the GPS supreme council meeting, in Kuching, this afternoon.

Abang Johari said GPS’ job was to look after the interests of the state.

That did not mean that Sarawak was oblivious of the impact politics on the peninsula had on the state, he said.

“We’ll observe.” – February 6, 2020.
