MALAYSIAN Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Latheefa Koya is unfazed by the threat of legal action by former prime minister Najib Razak over the disclosure of audio recordings in relation to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.

“I’ll wait for the papers. They have to serve them to me,” she told reporters after attending the Bank Rakyat Integrity Forum 2020.

Najib said he will file an application to cite the anti-graft chief for contempt over the release of nine audio recordings of the former prime minister and others allegedly conspiring to cover up the 1MDB scandal.

Yesterday, Najib’s lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, confirmed there will be a legal action but did not reveal further details.

At a press conference last Wednesday after the recordings were revealed, Shafee described Latheefa’s actions as “sub judice” and in contempt.

The lawyer questioned the necessity of revealing the audio recordings before they were handed over as evidence to the police for investigations.

He also believed Latheefa had breached the Official Secrets Act as certain matters discussed in her press conference were likely to be classified.

The recordings were allegedly of phone conversations between high-ranking individuals talking about the 1MDB case and how it affected Najib and his stepson Riza Aziz after the US Department of Justice began money laundering investigations in 2016.

The conversations took place between January and July 2016, and allegedly showed how the parties conspired to cover up the case.

Latheefa had said the recordings were sent by an unknown source after the new year.

She added that Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, may face fresh charges.

Najib and Rosmah are currently facing 42 and 20 charges respectively for abuse of power, money laundering and corruption.

Today, MACC lodged a police report over an alleged plot to tarnish its chief’s reputation following the release of the recordings.

Sasha Lyna Abdul Latiff, a special law officer to the MACC chief, lodged the report at the Putrajaya police station about 11am today.

She said the plot was hatched by several lawyers last Wednesday, the day the anti-graft agency released the audio clips. – January 14, 2020.

  • If indeed there was a plot hatched by a group of lawyers to tarnish her reputation, this indicates that Najib still enjoys support from some Malaysians who owe Najib allegiance and strong support. These people need to be investigated for two reasons, firstly for conspiracy and secondly to determine whether they have received money and material incentives sourced illegally from the disgraced ex Prime Minister. When investigation is complete with iron clad evidence compiled, AG should proceed to prosecute with full vigour. This is to ensure the culture of corruption sown by the first family of robbers will be uprooted so that another 1MDB scandal will never recur.
