LET the cabinet decide, said Lim Guan Eng on calls to slash allowances for ministers and politicians.

The finance minister said he welcomed any move that could result in savings, but such decisions should be made by the cabinet.

“This involves other ministers and ministries; I believe this should be decided by the cabinet. I cannot decide on this,” he said, adding that he respects his cabinet colleagues.

Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman had proposed that the government cut allowances for politicians and ministers, following the controversial decision to cut the Critical Service Incentive Payment for new doctors, nurses, engineers and other professionals joining the civil service.

The proposal received the support of Rural Development Minister Rina Harun.

In giving her support, she said some allowances had already been deducted since last year. – December 30, 2019.
