POLICE today questioned DAP’s Ronnie Liu for an hour to facilitate investigations into a gathering to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Hat Yai Peace Accord in Kajang, Selangor earlier this month.

The Hat Yai Peace Accord was signed in December 2, 1989 and marked the end of the Communist insurgency in Malaysia.

It was signed and ratified by the Communist Party of Malaysia, the government of Malaysia together with Thailand at the Lee Gardens Hotel in Hat Yai.

This afternoon, Liu, represented by Ramkarpal Singh, entered the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman at 3pm and left at 4pm.

Ramkarpal said Liu, who is Sungai Pelek assemblyman, came as a witness as he was invited as a speaker at the event commemorating the Hat Yai peace accord.

“YB Ronnie Liu has just finished giving a statement to the police. He came as a witness in relation to the 30th anniversary of the Hat Yai accord,” Ramkarpal said.

Investigation is under Section 505c of the Penal Code for public mischief with intent to incite or which is likely to incite people, he added.

It was reported that some 300 former communist symphatisers attended the gathering to commemorate the anniversary of the peace accord.

Among those who attended was former PKR deputy president Syed Husin Ali, PSM’s Dr Michael Jeyakumar and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Prof Abdul Rahman Embong.

Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had ordered the police to investigate the gathering.

On Liu’s attendance, Muhyiddin said police would be looking into the DAP representative’s motives.

Liu, however, said he was there in his personal capacity. – December 9, 2019.
