THE demand for a specific date for the prime minister’s handover of power will be brought up to Pakatan Harapan’s highest decision-making body, Amanah said today.
Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said he will raise the matter at the next Pakatan presidential council meeting, which is attended by the ruling coalition’s top leaders including Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
During the party’s annual convention, several delegates had demanded that the national leadership press the ruling coalition to set a definite date for the transfer of power.
Speculation over the transition is causing confusion among grassroots members and even dissuading investors from coming into the country.
“We will bring this demand to the Pakatan presidential council so that they pay attention to this,” Mohamad told reporters after the second day of the Amanah annual convention in Shah Alam today.
Dr Mahathir has repeatedly said he will hand over the reins to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim midway through Pakatan’s first term in government, although the agreement does not involve a specific date.
However, there are attempts both within Pakatan and outside it to persuade the 94-year-old to stay until the 15th general election.
PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali and some leaders from Dr Mahathir’s party Bersatu have publicly pledged their support for him to stay on. – December 7, 2019.
